What would you have done? I had a situation at work today that has me in knots and in a pissy mood... First thing this morning I sent an email to the area managers requesting that they each report the number of hours per person in their respective departments for the month of September. Each manager has about 7 folks who report to them, not too many in my opinion. I requested the information, stated that the purpose was to reward those who have gone the extra mile and set a deadline of 2pm. I had manager give me only a list of names without the hours. So when I asked for more information, I was told she "didn't have specifics" for me and to just give them the minimum reward. Another manager actually ed me hours past the deadline to ask if it was too late to report time. (I have a reciept that she read the email at 849am!!) I answered that , Yes I asked for the info by 2, so it is too late. Well, then I felt like a schmuck and thought that it's not fair of me to penalize others for their idiot manager's lack of timely response, so I walked to her department and told her to send me what she had an I'd see what I could do. I felt less like a schmuck, but righteously pissed because she 'ignored' my request until it suited her. I imposed a deadline because I needed to report to my own superior to effect the rewards. What would you have done?

why were you rewarding people for coming to work Sounds more like elementary school than business. If I were of those managers, I would wonder why you had nothing better to do than create work for them by asking them to tally hours which payroll must have already. I don't blame them for being peevish at you. I hate shit like that at work.

    I don't know how much info wrangling the managers needed to do to produce the numbers you wanted, but it doesn't sound like they had a lot of time to do it in. Since they had only a few hours' notice (and probably had to put aside other tasks they were juggling) to meet the deadline, I think a little flexibility on your part was a good thing. Maybe next time they can have a little more notice, and then no has to feel knotted up and/or pissy?

    thank you for your honest responses Just a little further information... Each of these managers has been reporting their area's overtime per person for 8 months now. I kind of thought that they would have been more prepared. This Friday is pay day, and we've been consistant in rewarding quickly. Oh well, maybe I was just having of those days.

    I can't tell your position from the explanatiion...... are you supposed to be able to solicit a response from them with an email. Personally, if you sent me an email that said my folks were up for some sort of reward that would be of my priorities. I think you are only as good as the folks that work for you. If I do well I want to see everybody do well. Everybody who has ever worked for me has been in profit sharing situation.... if BR does well, we all do well. I think that is how you keep folks on your side and not surfing all day on at their employers expense..... go fiigure. OK, turthiness..... your turn.........HA!

    You hnadled it far better than I would We have short notice requests all the time. I work in the field and often must dump what I am doing to drive upwards of x miles in circles to get the data needed. I do not get any reward other than my pay, but I do understand the need for information in a timely fashion. As BR said, if my boss does well I do well! A happy boss mkaes for happy employees

    I woul d have been pissed too but probably would have felt bad also penalizing her staff because she was lazy.. Next time maybe send them the email and CC your supervisor. sometimes people do things faster when the boss was cc also

    This does not make sense to me. If they report hours weekly and you reward weekly, there should be a standing procedure in place, it should not be a weekly scramble.
